Food, Land and a Farming Revolution with Sarah Langford

How we can heal our relationship with the land and gain a hopeful sense of a regenerative future

Sarah Langford was a barrister, living and working in the city. But then she found herself moving to the countryside, back to an agricultural life she thought she had left behind. There she saw farmers dealing with problems very different from those faced by her grandfather, who had helped to feed a starving nation after the war. Beleaguered with the challenges of climate change, Brexit and falling incomes, these farmers faced accusations of ecological mismanagement from a hostile media and public. But, as Langford looked to them to teach her about the land, she also found a new generation of farmers on a path of regenerative change.

In October 2022 Langford came to Intelligence Squared to talk about the themes of her new book Rooted: Stories of Life, Land and a Farming Revolution. In conversation with the chef and food writer Thomasina Miers she described how she learned what being a farmer means, shining a light on the human side of modern farming, and showing us how land connects us all, not only in terms of global sustainability but in our relationships with our physical and mental health, our communities, our planet and ourselves.

As arguments about our food and where it comes from reach a crescendo, Langford explained how we can heal our relationship with the land and gain a hopeful sense of a regenerative future.

Sarah Langford

Farmer and author of Rooted: Stories of Life, Land and a Farming Revolution.


Farmer and author. For ten years, she worked in criminal and family law in London and around the UK. Coming from a farming background in Hampshire, she studied English at University before training as a barrister. Sarah left the Bar on maternity leave to have her two sons. In 2017 she moved to Suffolk and, together with her husband, took on the management of his small family farm. She now lives between Southwest London and Suffolk. She is the author of the Sunday Times bestseller In Your Defence: Stories of Life and Law and her new book is Rooted: Stories of Life, Land and a Farming Revolution.

Thomasina Miers

Cook, writer, broadcaster and co-founder of the restaurant group Wahaca


Cook, writer, presenter and winner of MasterChef.  She co-founded Wahaca in 2007, winner of numerous awards for its food and sustainability credentials. In 2016 the whole restaurant group went carbon neutral and half of its menu is vegetarian. Miers’s passion lies in food and its power to positively impact people, health (both mental and physical) and the environment. She was a founding member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association in 2009, helped set up Chefs in Schools in 2017, for which she is a trustee, and was awarded an OBE in 2019 for her services to the food industry. She has a weekly column in the Guardian’s Feast magazine and has written numerous cookery books, most recently Meat-free Mexican: Vibrant Vegetarian Recipes.
