Actor, comedian and writer

Actor, comedian and writer who came to prominence by co-writing and acting in the groundbreaking Asian comedy sketch show Goodness Gracious Me (1996-2001). She is one of Britain’s most popular entertainers still remembered for her role as the grandmother, Ummi, in the Emmy-winning comedy The Kumars at No. 42 (2001-2006). She is the author of several books and screenplays including Bhaji on the Beach and Anita and Me, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel which charts the journey of a young British Asian girl caught between two cultures on the brink of change.

One of the most recognised voices in British broadcasting. Her work spans news and the arts – from working as a reporter and presenter on Channel 4 News to presenting the Proms. She presents Front Row on BBC Radio 4 and Newswatch on BBC One. She hosts the award-winning Intelligence Squared podcast, How I Found My Voice.
