Fiasco: Mark Galeotti on How Putin’s Wars Shaped Modern Russia

How Putin's wars have influenced the country's politics and how politics in turn have influenced Putin’s military campaigns

Mark Galeotti is one of the world’s leading experts on modern Russia and in January 2023 he came to Intelligence Squared to talk about the themes of his new book Putin’s Wars: From Chechnya to Ukraine. In conversation with the New Statesman’s Katie Stallard, Galeotti detailed how Vladimir Putin and his conflicts have shaped Russia in the 21st century. He showed how Putin has waged his wars, detailing the two incursions into Georgia, the annexation of Crimea and the eventual invasion of Ukraine, and explained how those wars have influenced the country’s politics and how politics in turn have influenced Putin’s military campaigns.
