Touchstones is a new series in which creative people talk about works of literature, art, places or objects that give them solace or inspiration. In each episode the guest talks us through the touchstones that provide them with inspiration, hold particular emotional meaning or are simply compelling objects or works of art that they return to time and again. In this episode we were joined by Salman Rushdie, award-winning novelist and author of Midnight’s Children and Quichotte.

Salman Rushdie

One of the world’s most acclaimed authors


Author of fourteen novels including Grimus, Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker), Shame, The Satanic Verses, Shalimar the Clown, and Quichotte (which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2019). He has also published works of non-fiction including Joseph Anton and The Jaguar Smile, and co-edited two anthologies, Mirrorwork and Best American Short Stories 2008. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a Distinguished Writer in Residence at New York University. A former president of PEN American Center, Rushdie was knighted in 2007 for services to literature. His latest publication is the essay collection Languages of Truth.

Razia was special correspondent at the BBC for over three decades and from 2011 to 2023 anchored Newshour on the BBC World Service. She is currently teaching at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, where she holds the John L. Weinberg/Goldman Sachs & Co. Visiting Professorship.
