Philippa Gregory, the number one bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The White Queen, came to Intelligence Squared on June 23 to discuss the themes of her new book Dark Tides and explore our endless appetite and fascination for historical fiction. Gregory is best known for her portrayals of women in the Tudor court of Henry VIII, and her latest novel tells a story of guile and betrayal in a family caught between London, New England and Venice.

Philippa Gregory

Bestselling novelist and author of 'The Other Boleyn Girl'


One of the world's foremost historical novelists. She is the bestselling author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The White Queen. She is a fellow of the Universities of Sussex and Cardiff and has an honorary research fellow at Birkbeck University of London. Philippa is a member of the Society of Authors and in 2016 was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Historical Fiction Award by the Historical Writers' Association. In 2018, she was awarded an Honorary Platinum Award by Neilsen for achieving significant lifetime sales across her entire book output. Her latest book, Dark Tides, is published in paperback this June.

Professor of history, author and broadcaster, the author of ten books, most recently on Mary Queen of Scots.


Historian and broadcaster. A specialist in modern history, royal and constitutional affairs, she is Professor of Modern History at Reading University. She was the co presenter of BBC 2's RTS nominated Restoration Home and has presented and contributed to many historical shows on TV, including her BBC Two Young Victoria and the BBC One show on VE Day and and has talked on shows from The Great British Bake Off to the history of TV election coverage. She is the in-house historical analyst for CNN, providing expert commentary for news and events such as the D-Day anniversary, the commemorations of the Holocaust atrocities and the funeral of the Queen.
